A fine type of the lake sailor and navigator was Captain Timothy Rahill, the logbook of whose life was closed Sunday night, and a fine type of clean and generous manhood he was also. For more than half a century his home was here in Buffalo; for most of the long period he was well known an respected from one end of the chain of lakes to the other. Captain Rahill was born in Ireland and came to this city when a child. He began sailing when yet a youth, became very skilled and proficient in his calling, and in 1870 received the command of what was a large steam vessel of the period. Thereafter for thirty years and more he was employed as master of line steamers, maintaining an excellent record to the time of his retirement. He was a man who truly knew his business well, a real sailor, a good citizen and a kind friend. Few of the old school of lake mariners to which Captain Rahill belonged remain. They were as able as any who navigated the salt seas, and they did much for developing the vast interest of our lake marine. Their memory is deserving of honor. Captain Rahill's death is an occasion for widespread regret.

Capt. Timothy Rahill, who for many years was a well-known vessel master on the great lakes, died on Sunday evening at his home, 27 Winspear Avenue, after a brief illness. Capt. Rahill was 68 years old at the time of his death. He was born in Ireland, and when he was 12 years old his family came to America and settled in Buffalo, where he resided ever since.

In 1858 Capt. Rahill began his life of sailing. He gradually advanced until in 1870 he was made master of a steamer. Afterward he was in command of several other boats successively. About five years ago he retired from active marine duties and entered the employ of the Buffalo Dry Dock Company.

Captain Rahill is survived by his wife and seven children. Joseph F., Edward M. and Jennie Rahill, Mrs. Maria O'Brien,, Mrs. Daniel J. Mahoney of this city, Mrs. Daniel J. Rehklau and Mrs. Benjamin Fanning of Newark, N.Y. He is also survived by one brother, James Rahill of this city, and two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Donohue and Mrs. Johanna Smith of Cleveland.

The funeral of Capt. Timothy Rahill, the well-known lake Captain, whose death occurred on Sunday last, will be held from the family home at 27 Winspear Avenue on Thursday morning at 8:30 o'clock and from St. Josephs's Cathedral at 9:30. Capt. Rahill has sailed the lakes for nearly 50 years, and was at times in command of a number of vessels along the Great Lakes.
