John
and Jane Hogarth are buried together in Sheldrake
Cemetery, Ovid, New York
They came
to America together with their children( Mary b. Oct.
28, 1784, Richard b. April 14, 1875 and Alice
b. June 9, 1790) from County Down, Ireland on July
12, 1792 in a sailing vessel. They sailed on this vessel
for eight weeks before arriving. While on this voyage
a great storm came upon them. John Hogarth feared the
worst while holding bed covers over the berths to keep
his family dry. It is written in old family letters that
he said to his wife "Jennie, give me your hand
once before we go to the bottom" the storm blew
over and they sailed on to America. They settled first
in Paterson, New Jersey, where John Scott Hogarth was
born in 1793. These Hogarths lived in Patterson for approx.
two years, leaving on account of concerns over the "fever
& ague". They removed themselves to the area
near Sheldrake, N.Y.
